Ms. Hossain is a lawyer who practices at the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, a partner at the law firm of Dr Kamal Hossain and Associates (www.khossain.com). She serves pro bono as the Honorary Executive Director of the Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (www.blast.org.bd) the largest specialist legal services organisation in the country and has been an active member of other national rights and justice organisations, including ASK.
At BLAST, Sara has been involved in developing partnerships of pro bono lawyers and community justice organisations, using technology for monitoring frontline legal services and providing information on legal rights and services to young women and workers in low income communities, and undertaking strategic litigation to address issues of discrimination and barriers to justice.
She has been involved in litigating landmark cases before the Supreme Court of Bangladesh (on ‘fatwa’ violence, sexual harassment guidelines, challenges to laws online speech, abuse of police powers of arrest, forced evictions, emergency medical services, challenges to discriminatory evidence rules in rape cases) and in supporting litigation before regional and international human rights mechanisms (cases before the ECHR and UN Human Rights Committee).
She has served as a member of the group of experts on accountability appointed by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to support the work of the Special Rapporteur on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, and of the Board of Trustees of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture and is currently a member of the UN Commission of Inquiry on the 2018 Protests in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. She earlier served as a Commissioner of the ICJ and is on the Advisory Committee of the Women’s Initiative for Gender Justice.
Sara has received various awards, including the 2016 International Women of Courage Award awarded by the US Secretary of State, an award from the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (now Human Rights First) and recognition from the World Economic Forum and the Asia Society. She earlier served as a Commissioner of the ICJ and is on the Advisory Committee of the Women’s Initiative for Gender Justice.
