Millions of African women continue to live in abject poverty and as if that’s not enough; a large number have to contend with being abused: emotionally, psychologically, economically and physically with no legal recourse. Lady Liberty SA’s mission is to use the law as a tool to empower these women. Functioning as a Social Justice and Advocacy Platform, Lady Liberty SA is a mobile legal office and digital platform providing legal information and services to underpriviledged and remote communities. The legal issues that we focus on are domestic violence, sexual assault, marriage, divorce, maintenance, wills and labour law.
Our intervention in based on legal education and case resolution and our outreach efforts combine community legal roadshows, website, social media, print media, radio television.
Lady Liberty SA partners include Uluntu Law Clinic, Norton Rose Fulbright, Werksmans, Lebo M Foundation, ProBono.Org and its seed funders include the Shuttleworth Foundation, SAB Foundation and the Pollination Project (NY). Lady Liberty was previously nominated for the UN Women and Master Card Foundation ‘Project Inspire’. Founder Sam N. Ngcolomba, an Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellow and L’Oréal Paris “Women of Worth” Honouree is an Attorney, admitted to practice in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
